Zags Travel to Fresno for Nick Watney Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga men's golf competes at the fourth annual Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif., Monday and Tuesday.

The 54-hole event is being played at the Sunnyside Country Club. The course will play at par 71, 6,921 yards. A shotgun start format will be used for rounds one and two, both held on Monday. All players will be re-grouped before the final round on Tuesday, based on scores, and tee off every 10 minutes from holes No. 1 and No. 10.

The 16-team field is comprised of host Fresno State, BYU, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, Seattle University, Utah, Gonzaga, Pacific, Cal Poly, CSUN and San Diego. Four of the 16 teams that will visit the Nick Watney Invitational are programs that rank in the Golfstat top 100 (last poll released June 6, 2017). Those teams are returning champion BYU, Saint Mary's, UC Santa Barbara and San Francisco.

BYU won the third annual Nick Watney Invitational last year, edging out second place finishers Nevada and Saint Mary's. The Cougars bested a field of 15 with a 1-over-par 853 while Eric Fischer (T-3) and Peter Kuest (T-5) led the way.

Watney turned pro in 2003 following a career at Fresno State from 2000-03. He has since earned 49 career top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour.

This will be the first time the Zags have appeared in the tournament. Gonzaga is sending David Ganz, Tyler Munetake, Ben DuBois, Nick Nolan and Matthew Ruel.

The Zags are coming off of a 10th place finish at the season-opening Maui Jim Invitational in Arizona Sept. 22-24. David Ganz tied for 22nd at four-over (220) par. GU went one-over (289) as a team in the third round. The Bulldogs were 34-over (898) in the tournament.
