Bulldogs Compete In Two Duals On Monday
March 12, 2018
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs wrapped up the Western Sprints Challenge on Monday on Mission Bay in San Diego with a busy day of duals against San Diego and Santa Clara.
The Zags opened the day against San Diego, with the varsity eight falling by just one second with a time of 6:31. The second varsity eight was victorious though, coming in 0.3 seconds ahead of the Toreros at 6:28. The third varsity eight won as well, by eight seconds, with a finish of 6:40.
“We had great water in the morning races and the racing was tight in the varsity eight and second varsity eight,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “The V8 charged late after trailing by as much as a length but came up just short. The second varsity eight trailed the first 1250 meters, but was able to battle for the win.”
Gonzaga finished the day with three races against Santa Clara, but the Broncos were able to sweep the set. The varsity eight was five seconds off SCU’s time of 6:19.29, the second varsity eight was 15 seconds back at 6:52, and the third varsity eight was just under three seconds behind Santa Clara’s finish of 6:46.
“The water was tough for us in the second session,” Gehn said. “We raced hard, but didn’t handle the water well. The third varsity eight did an excellent job not giving up in the second half of the race and it paid off.”
The Zags will head home but return to Mission Bay on Saturday, March 24 for the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic.
