Zags And Beavers Battle At Silver Lake
March 26, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs were more than happy to get some time on the water in a competitive setting Sunday morning as they hosted Oregon State at Silver Lake in a 2000 meter duel.
The Bulldogs have been battling the ice on the lake and raging waters on the Spokane River as obstacles to time on the water this spring, and that adversity had its effect on Sunday. The Beavers swept all four races, beginning with the varsity eight race by 22 seconds to open the day with a time of 6:29.40. The third varsity eight boats followed with Gonzaga finishing at 7:08.03, 43 seconds back of OSU. The Bulldogs’ second varsity eight boat clocked a time of 6:46.29, 30 seconds behind the Beavers. Those three races had a light tailwind, as the overcast day remained in the high 30s to low 40s.
The tailwind picked up for the final race, with the OSU fourth varsity eight boat finishing at 6:37.81, 12 seconds ahead of GU.
“This was a great morning for racing,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “Our effort was there, but we need more water time badly, so we have some catching up to do on all levels.”
The Bulldogs will certainly hit the water hard this week in preparation for the two-day San Diego Crew Classic beginning Saturday on Mission Bay in San Diego.
