Zags Shave Eight Seconds, Take Third In SDCC Petite Final
April 2, 2017
SAN DIEGO – The Gonzaga Bulldogs finished third in the Varsity 8+ American Specialty Health Cal Cup Petite final Sunday morning on Mission Bay in San Diego.
The Zags came in at 6:20.02, just 12 seconds back from first place UC Irvine and seven seconds behind MIT. GU defeated Purdue, Vanderbilt, Cal Maritime, UCLA, and San Diego State, and finished 11th overall in the Cal Cup.
The Bulldogs improved their time by almost a full eight seconds from Saturday when they placed third in their heat.
“We had a much better race today,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “The guys were much more aggressive in the start and first 500 meters. This allowed them to be in striking distance of the other crews. They were able to run down two or three other boats in the last 500 meters. We can build off this race.”
Next up for the Zags in two weeks is the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Penn on April 15.
