Second Varsity Eight Takes Sixth In Grand Final At Kerr Cup
April 14, 2018
PHILADELPHIA – The Gonzaga Bulldogs competed in the 52nd Annual Kerr Cup held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Penn on Saturday for the third-straight season.
The varsity eight began the day finishing fifth in the first heat at 6:51.78, eight seconds behind Trinity. The second varsity eight took second in their heat at 6:42.88, just six seconds off the leader St. Joseph’s on their home course, qualifying for the grand final for the second-straight season. They finished sixth in the grand final, matching their finish from last year, at 7:08.96. The varsity eight was a scratch later in the day in their final due to an injury their stroke suffered in the heat race.
St. Joseph’s claimed the Kerr Cup.
“The varsity eight heat was an underperformance from what they have been doing this year,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “Tough conditions and some equipment challenges didn’t help. This is a good group and I have confidence they will rebound and learn from this. The second varsity eight had a stellar heat placing second behind St. Joseph’s. The final was a different story and they struggled in the heavy conditions.”
Next Saturday the Zags will head down the road to Pullman for the annual Fawley Cup against Washington State on the Snake River.
