(RV) Zags Compete In Four Races At Kerr Cup
April 15, 2017
PHILADELPHIA - The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs competed in the 51st Annual Kerr Cup held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. this Saturday, April 15.
The second varsity eight kicked the day off for GU in the second heat, and finished third with a time of 6:34.05, five seconds back from St. Joseph's and one second faster than Army, and good enough for a spot in the grand final later in the day. The varsity eight cracked the water about two hours later in the third heat, finishing fourth, 23 seconds better than St. Mary's (MD) and 11 seconds back of Lehigh. The finish placed them in the petite final.
The Bulldogs second varsity eight took home sixth place in the grand final with a time of 6:46.30, 17 seconds behind No. 20 and host Drexel. The varsity eight took fifth in the petite final with a finish of 6:30.15, just five seconds behind Villanova and a dominating 25 seconds better than Loyola.
"The varsity eight didn't row well in the second thousand meters of either race," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "I was hoping to take some steps forward this weekend but we still have work to do. The second varsity eight did a great job making the final. That was their best race to date."
The Bulldogs are back in familiar waters next weekend as they will host the Fawley Cup against Washington State at Silver Lake just outside of Spokane. The regatta is the final home regatta for Gonzaga rowing this season.
