Bulldogs Sweep Fawley Cup Again
April 22, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs swept the Fawley Cup for the second consecutive year on Saturday morning at Silver Lake, just outside of Spokane, taking the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four races.
The Zags’ top crew finished at 6:29.9, seven seconds faster than the Cougars to officially claim the Fawley Cup trophy. The second varsity eight crew came in 19 second faster than WSU at 6:29.14, 17 seconds quicker than the time they recorded at Silver Lake against Oregon State on March 26. The GU novice eight finished at 6:35.27, 22 seconds better than WSU. The Bulldogs’ novice four recorded a time of 7:51.48, beating the Cougars by 13 seconds.
The novice eight and varsity eight boats faced 8-10 mph quartering headwind, and that became direct side wind for the novice four and second varsity eight races that followed. The temperature was in the 50s and the water was choppy all day. GU won their 12th Fawley Cup since 2002.
“This was good racing today,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “It was nice to get some wins.”
The Bulldogs will now begin a solid three weeks of training in preparation for the Western Sprints at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento on May 13, with the hopes of earning a bid to the IRA National Championships at the same site.
