GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs completed their 2018 season on Saturday at the Western Sprints at Lake Natoma in hot and windy conditions.
In the varsity eight race with a berth to the IRA Championships on the line, GU finished fourth at 6:12.8, their second-fastest time in program history at the Western Sprints. UC San Diego took the win at 6:01.8. The third varsity eight had the best finish for GU, taking runner-up at 6:27.9, the fastest they have ever gone at the Western Sprints. UCSD won that race as well at 6:16.59. The second varsity eight finished third at 6:12.8, their fastest time at the event and second-fastest overall time this season. UCSD completed the sweep at 6:04.9.
"We have had a good year of racing, but I didn't feel we had our best races today," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "The third varsity eight probably had the best race of the day. The second varsity eight was tough in the first 1000 (meters) but fell off after that. The varsity eight just got smacked off the start which took us out early. It was disappointing for the weekend, and it really didn't reflect what we have be doing all year long."
UC San Diego will advance to the IRA Championships.
