Oct. 14, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs opened their 2017-18 season by hosting Washington State Saturday morning in the annual Head of the Spokane on the Spokane River.
The morning was crisp and chilly, with patches of cloud cover. The course was setup at 5000 meters with a very light chop and a crosswind of 8 mph from the south.
The Zags’ top boat, the varsity eight, opened the day with a 44-second win over WSU at 15:53. The second varsity eight followed suit at 16:19 for a 35-second victory. GU raced two third varsity eight boats coming in first and second at 17:30 and 19:07.
The Bulldogs entered four boats in the varsity four race, taking first at 17:41, three seconds ahead of WSU. The rest finished third, fourth, and sixth at 18:01, 18:06, and 18:44, respectively. The GU first novice eight won by three minutes at 17:43 and the second novice eight won by just under three minutes at 18:41.
“I thought the guys handled themselves well on the race course today,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “I am very pleased with the times and rowing from all the boats.”
The same two schools are back on the water down south in Pullman next Friday for the Head of the Snake at 4 pm on the Snake River. Spectators can watch from Wawawai Landing.
