(RV) GU In Philadelphia Looking To Capture Kerr Cup
April 13, 2017
SATURDAY, APR. 15, 2017 | PHILADELPHIA | SCHUYLKILL RIVER | KERR CUP
SPOKANE, Wash. – The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to enter the 51st Annual Kerr Cup held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. this Saturday, April 15. The regatta is headquartered at the home of the Drexel University Rowing Program, Bachelors Barge Club, #6 Boathouse Row.
GU finished sixth in the varsity eight and second varsity eight grand finals last year with times of 6:02.06 and 6:09.24, respectively, in their first year entering the heralded event. The third varsity eight boat took fifth with a time of 6:19.39. The varsity eight was six seconds back of St. Joseph’s and the second varsity eight was less than a second behind West Point.
The varsity eight had finished second in their heat ahead of Fairfield at 5:49.95. The second varsity eight dominated Fairfield for third place in their heat at 6:04.61.
The field is impressive once again this year, featuring the host No. 20 Drexel, and St. Joseph’s, who is receiving votes along with Gonzaga, in the latest USRowing Coaches Poll.
In 2015, the Bulldogs trekked to Washington, D.C. for another East Coast regatta. The Zags battled hard in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight boats against Georgetown and George Washington. The top two crews of GU were within five seconds of the winning boats in all four races.
On Saturday the GU second varsity eight will begin the day for the Zags at 12:18 pm in the second heat. They are joined by Lehigh, Army, Delaware, St. Joseph’s, and Franklin and Marshall. The varsity eight hits the water at 1:30 pm in heat three. They are joined by St. Mary’s (MD), Drexel, UCSD, and Lehigh. The petite and grand finals are scheduled for later in the day, and will be updated at @ZagMRowing. Only Drexel (18) and UCSD (30) had better cMax rankings last season than Gonzaga at 40th, as rankings for 2017 have not been released yet.
"This is a great traveling race for us with good competition,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “Philadelphia has long been a mainstay for rowing, with lots of culture and history. We are looking forward to racing."
Live results for the event are located at GoZags.com.
The Bulldogs will get another look at UC San Diego in their two races, one of the crews they will be looking to beat at the Western Sprints on May 13 at Lake Natoma.
