GU Varsity Four To Compete In IRA Championships
June 1, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs will enter their varsity four crew in the upcoming IRA National Championships, to take place on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., June 2-4. The Zags will race at 11:30 am on Friday in the heat number four in lane three.
The Zags will be joined in the heat by Columbia, Fairfield, Cornell, Holy Cross, and Marietta. Gonzaga has not competed against any of those crews this season.
The Zags varsity four most recently finished 11th in the event in 2013. Before that, they finished fourth in 2007 and 2006. They finished seventh in 2005 and ninth in 2004.
Their fastest time in the event came at 6:22.905 in the 2007 Semifinals. The varsity four has not raced this spring season, but had four boats compete in the Head of the Spokane in the fall. The IRA Championships is held at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, one of the finest facilities in the country, and in conjunction with Nimbus Flats State Park, is the established site of every major west coast championship for high school and collegiate rowing.
The Bulldogs have raced on the course twice previously this season, the Head of the American regatta, on October 29. GU only traveled with their top eight crew and finished in seventh place finish with a time of 16:55.5. They were four seconds behind the boat from San Diego, but defeated boats from Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State, and Stanford. They competed in their conference championship, the Western Sprints on May 13. The Zags finished fifth in the varsity eight race with a time of 6:26.6. The GU second varsity eight finished third with a time of 6:18.1, their second-fastest time of the year, 11 seconds faster than San Diego and 11 seconds back of runner-up UC San Diego. The Zags' third varsity eight took third with a time of 6:49.3, also their second-fast mark of the season.
"With school done for the year, the guys have worked hard over the last three weeks to come together as a lineup,” Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. “This is a great opportunity to race against the nation’s best."
