Zags Enter Final Regatta Of The Fall Season At Head Of The Snake
Nov. 12, 2016
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men’s rowing team is set to complete the fall season this Sunday at 2 pm with the Head of the Snake at Wawawai Landing in Pullman against Washington State.
The Zags dominated the event last season sweeping every race by at least 10 seconds. The Varsity 8 boat took the waters first, navigating the 5,000-meter course in 15:24.7, 23 seconds faster than the Cougars. That time also was also the crew's fastest of the season at the distance at that time. The Freshman/Novice 8 boat beat WSU by 31 seconds at 16:27.0 to 16:58.1, and the Third Varsity 8 crew beat both WSU boats by over a minute and a half and two minutes, respectively. Additionally, the marks for both the Freshman/Novice 8 and the Third Varsity 8 were season bests at that point.
WSU was able to beat Gonzaga in the Varsity 8 race and Novice 8 in 2014, but GU won the Second Varsity 8 race that year. Winds cancelled the 2013 and 2011 events, and in 2012 GU won the Second Varsity 8, Novice 8, and Varsity 4 races. In 2010 the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 took home first place finishes. Looking back to 2009 the Second Varsity 8 and Novice 8 had victories, and in 2008, 2007, and 2005 Gonzaga swept victories in all the races. In 2006 the race was cut short due to winds
"We're looking forward to a strong showing as we wrap up our fall racing season,” Gonzaga assistant coach Mark Voorhees said. “The guys are ready to test their speed after another solid week of training."
The Zags will enter three boats in the regatta on Sunday, the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and the Novice 8.
For the Zags this completes the 2016 fall schedule. Check GoZags.com in the coming months for the release of the 2017 spring schedule.
