Mike McCarthy enters his second season on Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson's staff after an outstanding collegiate career for the Bulldogs. As a keeper for the Bulldogs from 1999-02, he capped his career by earning All-West Coast Conference first-team honors in 2002, posting a 1.43 GAA and two shutouts. As a junior he led Gonzaga to its inaugural NCAA College Cup appearance, his stingy 0.79 GAA helping the Bulldogs tie for second in the WCC and earn an at-large berth into the tournament. The native of Kailua, Hawai'i, tied fellow Islander Josh Fouts for second on the single-season shutout list with seven in 2001, and his 13 career shutouts rank second behind Fouts' 19. The 13 goals he allowed also tied Fouts for the second-fewest in a single season, McCarthy holding the top spot with 12 he surrendered as a sophomore in 2000 in earning All-WCC honorable mention accolades. His career GAA of 1.16 ranks second behind Fouts' 0.83. The 23-year-old McCarthy (3-4-81) will focus primarily on coaching Gonzaga's keepers and act as the men's soccer liaison with Gonzaga's strength and conditioning coaches. |
