SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior Jakob Granlund picked up where he left off last season as GU’s leading scorer, but GU was unable to hold off Bradley in the second half in playing to a 1-1 draw in the season opener at Luger Field.

Playing the first-ever game under the lights at Gonzaga, a crowd of more than 500 took in a well-played contest that saw the Zags take a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute and Bradley tie it in the 61st minute. The teams went scoreless the rest of the way through two overtimes.

“It was a great atmosphere for our first game under the lights,” head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. “The guys played with a lot of energy, and we definitely had our chances. We would have liked to have won the game, but we saw some good things tonight.”

The Zags outshot Bradley all night, taking a 26-9 edge overall and 9-2 edge in shots on goal. GU put the pressure on BU goalkeeper Logan Ketterer, but weren’t able to put home the gamewinner late.

Gonzaga’s goal from Granlund came on a perfect pass from junior midfielder Colton Cavey early in the second half. Cavey brought the ball in just outside the penalty area and slipped a feed into Granlund, who took a touch and ripped a shot past Ketterer.

Just 12 minutes later it was Bradley’s turn on the offensive end. Buseese Lwanga went up high to take a lofted pass from Jacob Taylor with his head for the goal.

Outside of Lwanga’s goal, GU’s defense was stout all night with good play from the back line. Jalen Crisler seemingly won every ball in the air with his head and Ben Willis was solid in net, deflecting away Bradley’s only other chance on net.

Granlund led GU with six total shots and four on goal while Sam Olson, Jalen Crisler Christo Michaelson and Ben White each took three shots. Freshmen Isaiah Jackson and Davis Behnke, along with sophomore Nathaniel Tolton, saw their first-career action in a Zag uniform.

Gonzaga will be back on the field on Sunday afternoon as they take on Illinois-Chicago at 3:30 p.m. at Luger Field.
