Zags' Relentless Attack Pays Off In 78th Minute In 1-0 Win
Sept. 1, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga Bulldogs had great chances all night and finally cashed in when Ben White collected a bouncing ball and chipped it near the net to find Christo Michaelson's header for the game-winner in the 1-0 win over UC Riverside at Luger Field on Friday night.
The Zags improved to 2-0 after winning their home-opener with the goal in the 78th minute, Michaelson's second of the young season. Ben Willis pitched his first shutout of the season in goal for GU, stopping a penalty kick in the 40th minute to preserve the 0-0 game.
GU put on great pressure in the first half with their starters and freshman Matt Kintzle and Theo O'Malley paced the frontline in the second half as GU outshot the Highlanders 19-7, with Willis collecting four saves.
"In the second half we were just hunting for that goal," GU head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "We had a number of breakaways and those two young guys came in and had a great game."
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0, winning their home-opener for the first time since 2012. They are back in action on Sunday at 4 pm against American, who defeated Oregon State earlier in the night. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
