Men's Soccer Falls 3-1 At Wisconsin
Sept. 2, 2000 MADISON, Wisc. - Host University of Wisconsin wrapped up the title of the Rocky Rococo-UW Classic Saturday with a 3-1 win over Gonzaga University in the season opener for the Bulldogs. The Badgers opened the tournament Friday with a 3-2 win over Drake University. Gonzaga will face Drake in a battle of Bulldogs Sunday at 11 a.m. PST. For the second straight match to open the season the Badgers had a multi-goal scorer as junior forward Dominic DaPra put two in the back of the Bulldogs net. Junior forward Valentine Anozie earned the first of his two assists when his shot was partially blocked by Gonzaga keeper Mike McCarthy, setting up DaPra for Wisconsin's first goal on the rebound at 23:48. DaPra would score again just over a minute later (24:55) when the UW was awarded a penalty due to a Gonzaga foul inside the box. Gonzaga scored its only goal when the Bulldogs received a penalty kick and senior forward Brian Ching put a line drive past Badger netminder Moriba Baker at 42:42. A short centering pass from Anozie to senior midfielder Abraham Bull was converted at 48:05 for the only score of the second half. The Badgers outshot the Zags 17-12 in the contest. Baker recorded four saves in the contest while McCarthy stopped a total of eight.
