Zags Off To Best Start Since 2003, Down American 4-0
Sept. 3, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs looked sharp and put together a near-perfect effort against American on Sunday on a hot day at Luger Field, beating the Eagles 4-0 to move to 3-0 on the young season.
Freshman Joe Corner earned his first goal as a Zag at the 18-minute mark when Connor Ourada sent him a perfect pass looping around the right side as he beat the keeper to his right. Three minutes later Ben White was fouled in the box and he took the honors, sliding home the penalty kick. Jalen Crisler opened the scoring in the second half at 66:45 when he headed a pinball header from Nick Ulowetz, that all began on a White corner kick. Ulowetz picked up three points on the day when he easily finished a cross setup beautifully by Corner at 71:54.
Ben Willis made four saves for the Zags picking up his second consecutive shutout win. The Zags led in shots 12-10 and Crisler controlled a backline that allowed very few good chances.
"We played awesome today," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "We started strong and never let up. The subs came in and there was no let down."
The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2003, when they also started 3-0. The Zags play their instate games next week, beginning with No. 10 Washington at 7 pm on Thursday in Spokane. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
