Sept. 6, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Penn State University sophomore forward Corey Hertzog scored the lone goal of the match to hand Gonzaga University a 1-0 setback Sunday at the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic hosted by Ohio State University. The Bulldogs (1-1-1) had tied the host Buckeyes 1-1 in double overtime Friday, while PSU (2-1-0) had suffered a 2-1 setback to Fullerton State University. Gonzaga keeper Scott Barnum, who has allowed just one goal in each of the three Bulldog matches thus far this season, was called on for a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes, while his PSU counterpart, Warren Gross, had three of his four saves in the match inside the 15 minute mark. Gonzaga kept the pressure on late, getting four corner its six second-half corner kicks in the last 10 minutes. Mitch Boland's shot off a Nick Love corner in the 87th minute was blocked, then Boland's second chance was saved by Gross. Hertzog's decisive goal came a minute later. Hertzog's goal was set up on a give-and go from Jason Yeisley who did a one-touch on the return and Hertzog sent the shot from the left top corner of the penalty box that found the upper right corner of the net. Barnum and Boland represented Gonzaga on the All-Tournament team which also included MVP Doug Verhoff, Dalton Summers, Matt Gold and Shrigley of OSU; Bobby Reiss, Celso Alvarez and Justin Burney of FSU, and Yeisley and Gross of the Nittany Lions.
