CORVALLIS, Ore. - For the fourth straight season Gonzaga University will have a 0-0 tie on its record after the Bulldogs and Oregon State University battled to a scoreless deadlock Sunday in the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Memorial Diadora Classic hosted by the Beavers.

Junior keeper Scott Barnum, a transfer from Spokane's Whitworth College, recorded the shutout in his first start as a Bulldog (0-1-1). The Beavers (1-2-1) were blanked for the third time in four regular-season matches. The Zags and OSU have one other scoreless match to their credit in 1998 at Gonzaga. Sunday's tie was the first between the teams in Corvallis and the third in the overall series the Beavers lead 16-7-3.

Both teams had first-half scoring opportunities denied by the keepers. Gonzaga's Ben Funkouser was thwarted on a diving save by Miller, and OSU's Robby Christner, who had a hat trick in Friday's 5-0 win over Howard University, had a shot ticketed for the upper right corner swatted away by Barnum. Christner set a NCAA record Friday for the quickest back-to-back goals by one player when he scored eight seconds apart.

Late in the first overtime, Gonzaga's Tye Perdido sent a pass to Collin Harrison inside the 6-yard box and Harrison's shot sailed high and wide.

Barnum, who has been rehabilitating a shoulder injury much of the fall campaign, made seven saves, while Miller had five on the OSU nets. The Beavers held a 15-11 shots advantage, including a 10-4 first-half edge. Funkhouser had six of Gonzaga's 11 shots and three of the Bulldogs five shots-on-goal.

The Bulldogs will head to Las Vegas, Nev., next weekend to compete in the UNLV Nike Invitational. Gonzaga will face host UNLV Friday and UC Riverside Sunday. The Bulldogs will make their home debut Sept. 19-21 in the Gonzaga NIKE Soccer Classic.
