Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The University of New Mexico (4-2-0) scored early and it was all the Lobos would need to defeat Gonzaga University (4-2-2) 3-0 Sunday in the finale of the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational men's soccer tournament.

In Sunday's first match, Binghamton University, which fell to Gonzaga 2-1 in overtime on Friday, came back to defeat UC Davis 1-0. UNM finished the tournament 2-0-0, Gonzaga and Binghamton each went 1-1-0 and UC Davis finished 0-2-0. Gonzaga claimed second by virtue of its victory over Binghamton as the UNM-Gonzaga match was a true championship match.

Patrick Pacheco's first goal of the season beat Gonzaga keeper Scott Barnum from 30 yards left side at 18:26 to give UNM all the scoring it would need.

The Bulldogs were outshot 22-10 and Barnum was called on for five saves. The Bulldogs had five shots on goal but could not dent Lobo keepers Victory Rodriguez who played into the 69th minute and had three saves prior to giving way to Justin Holmes who had a pair of saves. Seven of Gonzaga's shots came in the second half.

UNM all but put the match away in the first six minutes of the second half, striking for the final two goals of the match. The first goal and a 2-0 lead came at 47:20 as Michael Green scored his first goal of the season on a shot from inside the box that caught the right corner of the net. The final goal came four minutes later when James Urbany's rebound of a Justin Davis' shot went off Barnum and into the net.

The Bulldogs didn't get a second-half shot on goal until the final three minutes when Nick Love's shot was saved by Holmes resulting in a Gonzaga corner kick in the 87th minute, and Holmes denying Ben Funkhouser, who leads the Bulldogs with four goals and nine points this season, in the 88th minute.

Gonzaga starting forward Tye Perdido and reserve Philippe Garre, second on the team with three goals each this season, were held without a shot after combining for five shots - three on goal - in Friday's win. Both saw more than 60 minutes of action Sunday.

The Bulldogs had three players named to the All-Tournament Team - Perdido, Love and defender Nick Barclay. Love had the match-winning overtime goal Friday. Joining the Bulldog trio on the all-tournament team were midfielder/forward Michael Green, defender David Murphy, defender/midfielder Ryan Farquharson and midfielder Lance Rozeboom of UNM; keeper Jason Stenta and forward Scott Zobre of Binghamton, and midfielder/forward Paul Marcoux and defender Lance Patterson of UC Davis. Green was named the Offensive MVP and Murphy the Defensive MVP.

The Bulldogs will be idle until Oct. 2 when they open West Coast Conference plat at Saint Mary's College followed by an Oct. 4 match at Santa Clara University. Gonzaga's next home match will be Oct. 9 when Loyola Marymount visits Gonzaga Soccer Field.
