UC-Irvine Blanks Men's Soccer 1-0
Sept. 23, 2000 IRVINE, Calif. - Roger Davanger's goal at 49:18 was the only scoring Saturday as the University of California-Irvine (6-2-0) edged Gonzaga University 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match at Anteater Stadium. Davanger lobbed a soft kick which eluded Gonzaga keeper Joe Smith, who had 10 saves in the Bulldog nets. Ilia Nazarov got the assist. Tyler Reid stopped 4 shots in picking up the shutout. UC-Irvine held a 15-8 advantage in shots. The teams battled through a scoreless first half, the Anteaters doubling up the shots on Gonzaga 8-4. Gonzaga (3-4-0) was called for 12 fouls to six by UC-Irvine, and the Bulldogs were also issued three yellow cards. The Bulldogs, playing their seventh straight game away from home to open the regular season, will be at Cal Poly Sunday at 2 p.m. prior to making their home debut Friday against Western Washington University.
