Zags Score A Man Down In Overtime To Beat Denver 2-1
Sept. 30, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. - In a match the Gonzaga Bulldogs held momentum throughout, they kept it going a man down in the first minute of overtime as Christo Michaelson scored the game-winning goal against Denver Saturday night at Luger Field.
The Zags played the last eight minutes of regulation and into overtime 10 vs. 11, but just 58 seconds into extra time Joe Corner slipped a cross into the DU box and Michaelson stepped in between two defenders to one-touch it home, his team-leading fourth of the year.
"We knew we had to strike fast in overtime," Michaelson said. "Playing a man down gets harder the longer you play and we wanted to end it quick."
The Zags had a lot of good opportunities throughout, eventually leading 10-8 in shots, but it was Denver who took the 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on a ricochet header into the goal. GU tied the match in the 51st minute after a foul in the box led to a penalty kick opportunity for Ben White. He put it home for his second PK goal and third overall of the year.
Ben Willis made one save for GU as his defense was solid all night out in front and he improved to 6-3-1 after the win over Denver, who advanced to the NCAA Semifinals last year.
The Zags (6-3-1) won six non-conference games for the second-straight year and third time since 1999. They begin conference play at home next Saturday at 7 pm against Saint Mary's. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
