SPOKANE, Wash. - Arni Ingi Pjetursson scored a goal and assisted on another as Gonzaga University's men's soccer team won for the fourth time in its last five outings with a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly in the home opener for the Bulldogs Friday at Martin Field.

The win was the final tune-up for the Bulldogs (5-3-0) prior to opening West Coast Conference play at home Sunday against the University of Portland. Gonzaga's previous home matches Sept. 14 and 16 were canceled following the terrorist activities of Sept. 11.

Connor Quinn scored the only goal the Bulldogs and goalkeeper Mike McCarthy would need when he converted a perfect left-to-right cross from Scott Yuska to find the open net past Greg Blevins at 47:11. Pjetursson began the rush up the left side, passed to Yuska who put the ball on the foot of the cutting Quinn who made no mistake with the shot.

Pjetursson got the insurance goal 10 minutes later when his shot from inside the 18-yard box was slowed by Blevins but dribbled under the Mustangs' keeper and into the net for the unassisted tally at 57:04.

The Bulldogs, who held a 9-2 shots advantage in the first half and a 14-6 edge for the match, missed a couple of excellent opportunities in the scoreless first half. Taylor McCool's shot was swatted out of harms way by the defense at 15:34, Abbas Faridnia hit the crossbar at 31:45 and Pjetursson's line drive free kick from 30 yards ricocheted off the right post at 37:04. Gonzaga also nearly got the scoreboard in the final two minutes of the opening half when Mike Herzog's shot dribbled off Blevins and again was cleared off the doorstep by the defense.

The Mustangs (1-4-1) had a chance to ruin McCarthy's fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career when Andre Nestle fanned on a wide open net from 6 yards straightaway at 81:30. McCarthy was never severely tested as the defensive corps of Danny Huet, Tryggvi Bjornsson and Zach Scott continues to smother opposing offenses.
