Men's Soccer Throws Broncos 3-0 In WCC Opener
Oct. 6, 2000 SPOKANE, Wash. - Defender Zach Scott scored his first goal of the season, Jason Kuska continued his torrid scoring and Brian Ching contributed a goal in his return to the lineup as Gonzaga University stopped Santa Clara University 3-0 in the West Coast Conference men's soccer opener for both teams Friday at Martin Field. The win was the third in a row for the Bulldogs (6-4-0, 1-0-0) while the Broncos (5-4-0, 0-1-0)suffered their second straight loss and their third in the last four outings. Scott tallied his second career goal and his first this season when he headed in Scott Yuska's corner, beating Broncos' keeper Rusty Johnson to the far side at 37:02 to give Gonzaga a 1-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs wasted little time increasing the lead in the second half, Kuska scoring his 11th goal of the season at 46:49. Kuska took a through ball from Yuska and beat Johnson, who ranged out of the goal, from the right side. Ching, who missed the last four matches with a hamstring pull, returned to action and contributed his fifth goal of the season at 62:34, taking a pass from Kuska and rifling a shot past Johnson from 18 yards straight on. Gonzaga midfielder Justin Franson had a late rebound goal waved off due to an offside. The Bulldogs got a solid defensive effort in front of McCarthy, who recorded his second straight shutout and Gonzaga's third of the season. "Danny Huet played an especially strong game on defense," Thorarinsson said, "and McCarthy did a good job of directing the play and distributing the ball." McCarthy was called on for just one save, while Johnson had four in the SCU nets. The Broncos held a slim 15-13 edge in shots. SCU never truly tested McCarthy, and most of the Broncos' best scoring opportunities were long-range shots that sailed high or wide of the goal. "This is a good start for us," Thorarinsson said of winning the WCC opener. Gonzaga plays its next two WCC matches at home to end its home slate. The Bulldogs host Saint Mary's College one week from Sunday and face the University of San Francisco Oct. 20 in the home finale. Gonzaga ends the season with non-league matches at the University of Washington and Oregon State University, then plays three straight WCC road matches.
