Gonzaga Men's Soccer Loses Re-Match With Oregon State
Oct. 10, 1999 CORVALLIS, Ore. - Greg Howes scored twice to help Oregon State University to a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer win over Gonzaga University Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (4-6-0) avenged last Monday's 2-0 setback at Gonzaga (6-6-1). Howes scored his fourth and fifth goals of the year. His first goal at 14:55 came off a Justin Kirk cross to the right side of the net, Howes tapping the ball past Bulldog keeper Trevor Yost. His second goal came at 69:01, Ben Roth pushing the ball in from the left side and Howes firing it inside the near post. Jason Kuska cut the Gonzaga deficit to 2-1 at 77:26 with his eighth goal of the season, finding the loose ball in the box and scoring the unassisted goal. OSU senior keeper Jake Smith, making his first career start, made 8 saves. Yost had 4 saves in the Gonzaga net. The Beavers topped Gonzaga for the first time since 1996, ending a 5-match winless streak in the series. The teams played to a scoreless tie in Spokane last season with Gonzaga taking the re-match in Corvallis 2-1. Gonzaga, a 1-0 loser Friday in a West Coast Conference match at top-ranked Santa Clara University, will be idle until Oct. 22 when the University of San Diego visits Martin Field at 3 p.m. in a WCC outing.
