Gonzaga, Saint Mary's Battle To 1-1 Men's Soccer Deadlock
Oct. 17, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College played to a 1-1 double-overtime West Coast Conference men's soccer tie Friday at Gonzaga Soccer Field. All the scoring came in the first half as the Bulldogs (5-6-2; 2-3-1) got on the scoreboard first when Tye Perdido won a race to the ball and shipped it into the open net for his sixth goal this season at 8:20. A Gaels (3-6-3; 2-1-2) player headed the ball toward SMC keeper Jason Badger to gain the safety control of the possession, but Badger was coming out of the box to follow the play at the time of the header and the ball went past him. Perdido won a dead spring to the ball deep to the left of the goal and was able to direct the ball to the far side and into the empty net. SMC knotted the match at 39:56. Joel Fumia had a free kick from 30 yards into traffic bounce off a couple of players, and Yousef Samy got enough of his head on the ball to direct it into the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Fumia also gave the Gaels a 2-1 halftime lead when his lob to the open net from outside the 18-yard box on the left wing went high in the 44th minute. Perdido also had a good, although not hard, shot on goal in the 26th minute when he was able to get a shot away while being pressured by a defender from 12 yards. The ball bounced off Badger's chest but he easily regained control. Gonzaga had the best of the chances in overtime, both coming in the second OT session. Nick Barclay's head in front of the net off a free kick went high, and Mitch Boland tried to chip a low, soft corner kick into the goal from close range but he re-directed it off Badger for the easy save. SMC had one dangerous shot in the second overtime. Emmanuel Sarabia had a shot from deep near the goal line on the right side that was a tough angle, but Barnum got a hand on it and deflected it out of bounds to the far sideline.
Badger had five saves for the Gaels while Barnum had two saves in the Gonzaga net. Gonzaga controlled most of the territorial play early in the match and held a 7-3 shots advantage in the first half and a 14-9 edge for the match. Four of SMC's shots came in the overtime. Gonzaga will be idle until next Friday when the Bulldogs host the University of Portland in a 2 p.m. match. |
