SEATTLE, Wash. - The 7th-ranked University of Washington men's soccer team posted its fifth shutout of the season as it handed Gonzaga University a 3-0 setback in non-conference action in front of 1,348 rain-soaked fans at Husky Soccer Field Friday night.

The Huskies also maintained the upper hand in the regional rivalry, moving the series record between the teams to 16-0-1 in favor of Washington.

The Huskies improved to 10-4-0 for the season, boosting their home record to 6-2-0, while the Bulldogs had a five-match win streak snapped in seeing their record drop to 8-5-0. Gonzaga sits atop the West Coast Conference standings with a 3-0 record and had been ranked tied for 8th in this week's Far West regional rankings.

Washington took an early lead in the match when senior midfielder Kai Carroll took a pass from Zach Kingsley on the right side and put the ball in the open net from 10 yards out for the first score at 15:32.

It wasn't until late in the match that Washington got on the board again. After a Gonzaga foul, junior midfielder Ben Somoza took the free kick and sent it over the top of the Bulldog wall and into the net at 76:06. Washington sealed the victory with a third goal at 83:57 when Jake Sagare put the ball in from 8-yards out following a Husky corner kick. Bryn Ritchie was in on the action near the net for the assist.

Washington outshot Gonzaga, 17-10, with the Huskies taking a 10-3 advantage in the first period. The Huskies also had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks while the foul situation was high on both sides, with the Bulldogs tallying 23 and Washington 22.

Sophomore keeper Chad Olsen again went the distance for Washington, making three saves in the game and earning his fifth shutout of the year. Gonzaga keeper Mike McCarthy had four saves in goal in seeing his personal 5-match winning streak snapped since an opening-day loss.

The game was televised by Fox Sports Northwest and will air Saturday at 2 p.m. Gonzaga continues its non-conference swing through the Pacific Northwest with a noon match Sunday at Oregon State University.
