Men's Soccer Title Hopes Falter With Loss
Oct. 31, 1999 MORAGA, Calif. - - Gonzaga University, in control of its West Coast Conference title destiny heading into the weekend, again must look for help after dropping a 2-0 men's soccer setback at Saint Mary's College Sunday afternoon. The Bullodgs (9-7-1, 3-2-0) saw the Gaels (8-7-1, 2-0-1) remain as the only WCC team without a loss. Santa Clara University (2-1-1) is the only other team with less than two losses in WCC play. Gonzaga, which has this week off, will end the regular season at home Nov. 13 when the University of Portland (10-4-1, 2-2-1) visits for a 1 p.m. match. Portland suffered a 4-0 loss to Santa Clara Saturday. The most points Gonzaga can finish with is 12, while SMC can finish with as many as 16, and SCU with as many as 13. SCU and SMC played to a tie this season. Sophomore Nick Marcum scored both goals Sunday, connecting in the first five minutes of each half. The first goal came just 2:35 into the game when a cross from Jon Gordon was headed into the upper right corner of the goal. Marcum’s second goal was scored at 48:51. When Bulldog keeper Trevor Yost could not handle the corner kick from Brian Rhodes, Marcum was there to put the rebound in the back of the net. Senior SMC keeper Steve Reardon recorded eight saves in the contest, six in the first half. Reardon and freshman Kellan Wilson combined for the shutout when Reardon left the game due to a cut.
