SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team claimed first place in the West Coast Conference with a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga University Friday at Torero Stadium.

The loss was the first in the WCC for the Bulldogs (9-6-0, 3-1-0) while 8th-ranked USD (13-1-2, 4-0-1) moved closer to the WCC crown.

With 13 points the Toreros lead Gonzaga (9 points) and Loyola Marymount University (7 points) heading into the final week of the regular season. In order for the Bulldogs to capture the crown they will have to beat LMU Sunday in Los Angeles and win at the University of Portland next Friday, while at the same time hoping the Toreros either lose or tie its remaining match with Saint Mary's College.

Sophomore Ryan Coiner scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute of the match. Coiner headed in his 17th goal of the season off Gonzaga keeper Mike McCarthy as freshman Scott Burcar was credited with his fifth assist of the year.

Three cautions were issued to each team in the critical WCC match. The Bulldogs committed 20 fouls and USD was charged with 14. Gonzaga outshot USD 18-16. USD junior goalkeeper Justin Neerhof earned his 11th win of the season while recording 5 saves in the shutout.
