LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount scored the decisive goal in the 71st minute and defeated Gonzaga University 2-1 Friday in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match.

The match-winning LMU (8-8-1; 3-5-1) goal was scored by Artur Jozkowicz, his first of the season, at 70:02. It came on a give-and-go through the middle from Phil Da Silva.

The Bulldogs (6-8-3; 3-6-1) got on the board early when Nick Love scored his third goal of the season at 5:36 on an assist by Tye Perdido. The initial thrust was from Perdido who managed to step around LMU freshman goalie Max Young, but his shot was stopped on the line by sophomore Tyler Krumpe. The rebound came straight back to Perdido, however, who dropped a pass back to Love, whose left-footed finish found the open net from10 yards.

The Lions knotted the contest when Steffen Canty's penalty kick was saved by Scott Barnum on a diving save to his right but the rebound came back to Canty who scored his second goal of the season at 39:41. It was the first time in four chances the Bulldogs had thwarted a penalty kick this year.

The Bulldogs had an excellent chance to take the lead in the 22nd minute, but Perdido's shot hit the post.

LMU peppered 23 shots, 14 of them on goal as Gonzaga keeper Scott Barnum had a season and career-high 12 saves. He had 11 saves in a match each of the past two seasons. With the 12 saves he also became the all-time Gonzaga single-season saves leader with 92, surpassing Mike McCarthy who had 91 in 2002.

Barnum held the Lions at bay as best he could. First, junior Rafael Baca was put through the middle by a pass from Da Silva, only to see Barnum go low to his right for a one-handed stop. In the 17th minute, Baca and sophomore Alex Greenman linked up to provide an opportunity for Logan McDaniel. McDaniel rose high and sent a powerful header straight at Barnum. Sean Sears' diving header brought Barnum into a save low to his left minutes later.

Barnum continued to stuff Lions opportunities in the second half. The Lions had a 2-on-1 with Baca sending McDaniel through, but Barnum came out to deny McDaniel's shot with a kick-save. Moments later, Jozkowicz was kept out by Barnum going low to his right.

Perdido had a chance to tie with 11 minutes remaining when he drilled a shot at senior goalkeeper Patrick Sampson, who had entered at halftime. Sampson was equal to the task with a punch away.

The Bulldogs had one last chance to get the equalizer in the final minute, Ben Funkhouser breaking through for a shot that Sampson denied with a save to his left.

Young, who played the first half, and Sampson combined for four saves, three by Sampson. LMU also had the one team save.

The Bulldogs will play their final road match of 2009 Sunday at the University of San Diego at 1 p.m. Gonzaga will be without senior defender Tim Muravez Sunday after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season Friday. A fifth yellow carries an automatic one-game suspension.
