Men's Soccer Announces Cameron Bushey As Assistant Coach
March 1, 2018
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga men’s soccer head coach Paul Meehan introduced Cameron Bushey the Zags’ new assistant coach on Thursday.
Bushey, the son of former Whitworth coach Sean Bushey, is a local product and comes most recently from the Spokane Shadow, of the National Premier Soccer League. He spent one season as the men’s first team head coach, but served as the Youth Director of Coaching for the Shadow since 2015.
He spent two seasons as an assistant with Spokane Falls Community College. Bushey has also led the Colorado Rush Soccer Club, serving as the Youth Boys Director of Coaching from 2012 to 2015 and the women’s league team assistant coach from 2012 to 2013. His coaching career began as a coach with the Spokane Shadow Youth Club from 2010 to 2012.
“To join the Gonzaga community here in Spokane is a fantastic thing,” Bushey said. “Having grown up in Spokane and lived here most of my life, I have been a Gonzaga supporter and fan for a long time. People from here know of this university's excellence and its impact in the community. I am honored to join the staff and continue the path toward excellence, as it is always moving forward. Gonzaga men's soccer is on that path. I am so happy to be a part of the great things that are going on in Gonzaga Athletics and work with these young men, Coach Meehan, Coach Higgins and the Zag family.”
Bushey also grew up playing youth soccer with the Shadow, which his father coached from 1997 to 1999. He played collegiately at Whitworth where his teams were three-time Northwest Conference Champions and made the NCAA Elite Eight in 2009. Individually, he was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection along with being a Second Team All-Region and two-time Second Team All-Conference honoree.
“Cam will bring a great deal of positive energy and is truly a student of the game, as well as being an excellent leader,” Meehan said. “His desire to work hard and get better sets a great example for our players. I’m excited to have Cam on board and I think he will be an outstanding addition to our program.”
The Gonzaga Bulldogs will enter their first season under head coach Paul Meehan in 2018, who previously served as an assistant coach for five years at GU.
