SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University received votes and helped shake up the first weekly SoccerTimes.com rankings by virtue of the Bulldogs 1-0 victory Sunday over defending College Cup champion UC Santa Barbara.

The Bulldogs garnered 9 votes from the panel of coaches to appear in the others receiving votes category.

UCSB, which had tied Stanford University 2-2 in its season opener Friday prior to Sunday's upset to Gonzaga, fell from first in the pre-season rankings to 12th this week.

Gonzaga downed a defending national champion for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs losing 1-0 to UCLA in 1998 in their only other matchup against a defending champ. UCLA won the 1997 title with a 22-2 mark. The win over the top-ranked Gauchos was the second for the Bulldogs over a No. 1 team. Gonzaga won at Creighton University 1-0 in 1999 in the Blue Jay Invitational, then two weeks later fell to West Coast Conference foe and then top-ranked Santa Clara University 1-0.

The going doesn't get any easier for the Bulldogs with No. 15 University of Washington coming to town Friday for a 4 p.m. match following the Gonzaga women's match with Washington State University that has a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Washington, 18th in the SoccerTime.com pre-season poll, moved up three spots after a 1-0-1 start last weekend with a scoreless tie against the University of New Hampshire and a 5-1 victory over CS Bakersfield to win the NIKE Invitational hosted by the University of Portland.

Gonzaga has not been ranked in the Top 25 since Oct. 16, 2001, when the Bulldogs were 16th in the Soccer America balloting to match their highest ranking ever.

The Bulldogs did not receive votes in the Soccer America, NSCAA or College Soccer News polls, the other three major recognized polls.
