The Bulldogs will host the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic this weekend when Georgia Southern University and the University of Detroit Mercy join the Beavers. Action starts Friday at 1:30 p.m. when OSU meets Detroit Mercy at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Bulldogs and Georgia Southern at 4 p.m. The tourney concludes Sunday with OSU taking on Georgia Southern at 10:30 a.m. followed by Gonzaga and Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. BARNUM, BOLAND HONORED: Gonzaga University keeper Scott Barnum and defender Mitch Boland were named to the All-Tournament team at the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic hosted by Ohio State University last weekend. The Bulldogs tied host Ohio State University 1-1 in double overtime and fell to Penn State University 1-0. Barnum matched his career high with 11 saves in the tie with OSU, and had 16 saves and a 0.90 GAA in the tournament. Boland had a strong all-around tournament and nearly hit the match-winning shot just minutes before Penn State got the decisive goal in the 88th minute. PICKET FENCE: After three matches Gonzaga University stands at 1-1-1. Prior to last weekend's venture into Big Ten country the Bulldogs had opened the season with a 5-1 win over Trinity Western University of Langley, British Columbia. Five different players scored in the contest, including freshman James Matern of Spokane's Ferris High who netted his first goal. TOURNAMENT HISTORY: This is the fourth Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic which dates back to 2002. Tournaments were also played in 2005 and last season. Gonzaga University is the defending champion, downing Cal State Bakersfield in last year's true championship game as both teams entered the final day 1-0. Oregon State University has played in all three previous tournaments, finishing third in 2002 and 2008 and claiming the crown in 2005. Gonzaga finished second in 2002 and fourth in 2005. FAMILIAR FACE: Oregon State University is coached by first-year head coach Steve Simmons, a Bulldog assistant in 1994. When the Bulldogs hired current head coach Einar Thorarinsson he was replaced at Spokane's then-Whitworth College by Simmons for his first head coaching job. THORARINSSON HITS, PASSES 50: We're not talking age, but rather the number of West Coast Conference wins for Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson, who got WCC victories 50 and 51 last season. That makes him the fourth winningest coach in WCC matches and the second winningest active coach in the WCC ranks behind Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego who leads both categories with 81 victories in 29 years at the helm. THE STATS: Senior Tye Perdido is tied for eighth with Arni Ingi Pjetursson (2001-04) on the Gonzaga University career goals chart with 15, and his 38 points knot him for eighth with Brett Fink (1997-99). Ben Funkhouser's 10 career assists have moved him into a tie for 10th with Chris LaRochelle (1995-97) and Matt Blasdel (1997-99) on the all-time Gonzaga list. BARNUM HOT: If there was a keeper battle entering the season senior Scott Barnum may have taken the lead off his performance thus far. He has allowed one goal in each of the three matches thus far and brings a 0.96 GAA into this week's play. Redshirt freshman Jeff Renslo spelled Barnum for the final 9:18 in the season-opening 5-1 win over Trinity Western University.
