UNLV Nike Invitational - Las Vegas, NV Friday, September 12 - UNLV 7 p.m. Sunday, September 14 - UC Riverside, 10:30 a.m. Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic - Spokane, WA Sunday, September 21 BULLDOGS HEAD TO UNLV NIKE INVITATIONAL: Gonzaga University gets is first true taste of tournament action in 2008 when the Bulldogs visit Las Vegas, Nev., for the UNLV Nike Invitational. The Zags open the tourney Friday at 7 p.m. against the host Rebels, then face UC Rivers Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Bulldogs were part of the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Memorial Diadora Classic hosted by Oregon State University last weekend, but the Bulldogs played just one match. Gonzaga returns home next week to host the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic. BULLDOGS-BEAVERS PLAY SCORELESS TIE: For the fourth straight season Gonzaga University will have a 0-0 double-overtime tie on its record after the Bulldogs and Oregon State University battled to a scoreless deadlock last Sunday in the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Memorial Diadora Classic hosted by the Beavers. It was second scoreless deadlock in the series, the other coming at Gonzaga in 1998. OSU leads the series 16-7-3. BARNUM A ZERO IN DEBUT: Scott Barnum made the most of his Gonzaga University debut last Sunday, recording seven saves in a scoreless deadlock at Oregon State University. Barnum, a transfer from Spokane's Whitworth College last spring, had been limited most of the fall while rehabilitating a shoulder injury and was just cleared to play last week. Barnum is expected to be in the nets again Friday when Gonzaga visits UNLV in the UNLV Nike Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. NOT A BAD LOSS: Gonzaga University need not hang its head over the 4-1 loss at Creighton University in the season opener. At the time, the Bluejays were ranked in the Top 10 in all four major polls. Following a 3-0 win over Gonzaga's West Coast Conference foe University of Portland and a 2-0 win over UC Riverside - the Bulldogs Sunday opponent at the UNLV Nike Invitational this weekend - Creighton has moved to the runnerup spot behind Wake Forest University in the Soccer America, SoccerTimes and College Soccer News polls this week. Creighton is "only" third in the NSCAA/adidas vote of coaches. That makes the Bulldogs the only team to dent the net against its fellow Jesuit institution after two weeks of competition. THE REBELS: UNLV is 3-1 entering Friday's match with Gonzaga University, the Rebels suffering their first loss in a 3-1 setback to UC Santa Barbara in the CS Fullerton Tournament last Sunday. Forward Daniel Cruz has three of UNLV's five goals this season, and keeper Hawk Mummey has allowed three goals - and a pair of shutouts - in playing all four matches. GU VS. UNLV: Gonzaga University leads the series with UNLV 4-1-1. The teams last met in the 2006 season opener at Gonzaga, the hosts taking a 4-1 victory for the second straight Bulldog win over UNLV. THE HIGHLANDERS: UC Riverside is 0-4 following last Sunday's 2-0 loss at Creighton University. The Highlanders have opened the season against four straight ranked opponents - the University of California, UCLA and Saint Louis University joining now second-ranked Creighton on the UCR schedule. UCR's lone goal was in a 3-1 loss to Cal in the season opener. GU VS. UCR: UC Riverside captured the only meeting against Gonzaga University, a 3-0 win in the 2002 Diadora Classic in Corvallis, Ore. BULLDOGS IN LAS VEGAS: This weekend will be Gonzaga University's fifth trip to Las Vegas, Nev., for a men's soccer tournament. The Bulldogs last speared in the UNLV Tournament in 2003, going 1-0-1. Gonzaga won the 1996 UNLV Invitational with a 2-0-0 mark. Gonzaga is 5-2-1 overall in tournament action in Las Vegas. GAMETRACKER AVAILABLE: Gametracker, a function of web site provider CBS Collegesports, will be available for all Gonzaga University home matches and select Bulldog road contests this season. To follow Gonzaga University via Gametracker log on to http://wwww.gozags.com and go the Gametracker link in the schedule portion of the site. TIME CHANGE: Gonzaga University's season-ending Nov. 16 match at Saint Mary's College has been moved an hour earlier to a 1 p.m. kickoff. The change was made to accommodate the NCAA Selection Committee deadline. THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 110-103-21 in his 14th season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 229-155-34 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. He picked up his 100th Gonzaga win in 2006 with a 3-0 home win at Saint Mary's College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last 10 seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance. In 2005 Gonzaga went to the final match of the season with a chance to win the WCC title. He was accorded his third WCC Coach of the Year honor in 2005 to go with similar honors won in 1996-97 as he was the first coach in Gonzaga history to receive back-to-back WCC Coach of the Year accolades. He is the fourth winningest coach overall in WCC contests with 46 wins and is second among active coaches, Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego atop both lists with 73 wins.
