Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational @ Albuquerque, NM Friday, September 18 Gonzaga vs. Binghamton, 4 p.m. PDT New Mexico vs. UC Davis, 6 p.m. PDT Sunday, September 20 Binghamton vs. UC Davis, 10 a.m. PDT Gonzaga vs. New Mexico, 12:30 p.m. PDT BULLDOGS HEAD TO ALBUQUERQUE: Tournament play continues for Gonzaga University's men's soccer team this week as the Bulldogs head to Albuquerque, N.M., and the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational. Gonzaga will face Binghamton University of New York in Friday's 4 p.m. PDT opener, then face host University of Mexico Sunday at 12:30 p.m. PDT in the tourney finale. IT'S BEEN AWHILE: It's been awhile since Gonzaga University has participated in a tournament hosted by the University of New Mexico - 11 years to be exact. The Bulldogs competed in the 1998 New Mexico Classic, downing the host Lobos 2-1 and knotting Air Force 0-0. BULLDOGS REPEAT AS CHAMPIONS: Gonzaga University captured its second straight Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic last week with a 3-0 victory over Georgia Southern University and a 4-0 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy. The Bulldogs had finished second and fourth in its first two tournaments in 2002 and 2005, respectively. BARNUM LEADS GONZAGA CONTINGENT: Defender Nick Barclay was named MVP of the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic, leading a five-man Gonzaga University contingent on the all-tournament team. He was joined by forwards Tye Perdido and Philippe Garre; midfielder Ben Funkhouser, and keeper Scott Barnum. For Barnum it was his second straight all-tournament selection after being named to the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic squad hosted by Ohio State University the previous week. Joining the Bulldogs on the all-tournament squad were Oregon State University keeper Steve Spangler, midfielder/forward Danny Mwanga and midfielder/forward Colin Mitchell; defender Austin Steel, midfielder Danny Hall and forward Jon Cox of Georgia Southern University, and midfielder Victor Otieno of University of Detroit Mercy. TWO GOALS: Senior forward Tye Perdido and junior midfielder Philippe Garre each scored a pair of goals in Gonzaga University's 4-0 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy in last Sunday's match. It was the second two-goal match of Perdido's career. Garre's goals were his first of the season and marked the first two-goal match of his career. His first goal in the 48th minute proved to be the match winner, the third of his career. Garre had just three career goals entering this season. BULLDOGS TIE OSU: Gonzaga University got its third penalty kick goal of the season and Ben Funkhouser scored his second PK goal as the Bulldogs came from behind to tie Oregon State University last week. Joel Schilperoort was pulled down trying to split the defense and Funkhouser converted the kick at 83:15. Because of darkness the teams only played one overtime period. It was the second time this season Schilperoort had set up a penalty kick. GONZAGA VERSUS THE LOBOS: Gonzaga University has not faced the University of New Mexico since 2003 when the teams tied 1-1 in double overtime at the UNLV Invitational. The teams also met in the 1996 UNLV Invitational, the Bulldogs taking a 3-0 victory. Gonzaga leads the overall series 2-0-1. The Lobos are off to a 2-2-0 start this season. FIRST MEETING: Friday's meeting between Gonzaga University and Binghamton University will be the first between the teams. Binghamton is 2-2-0 this season. The university is located in southern New York near the northwestern corner of the Pennsylvania/New York border. THORARINSSON HITS, PASSES 50: We're not talking age, but rather the number of West Coast Conference wins for Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson, who got WCC victories 50 and 51 last season. That makes him the fourth winningest coach in WCC matches and the second winningest active coach in the WCC ranks behind Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego who leads both categories with 81 victories in 29 years at the helm. THE STATS: Senior Tye Perdido's two goals last Sunday have moved him into a tie for sixth with Jason Adams (1991-94) with 17 career tallies on the Gonzaga University list. Current Bulldog assistant coach Mike Thompson is next in Perdido's sights, Thompson with 18 from 1996-99. Perdido has climbed to sixth on the career points list with 44. Thompson is right ahead of him on that list, too, with 52. Ben Funkhouser's 10 career assists have moved him into a tie for 10th with Chris LaRochelle (1995-97) and Matt Blasdel (1997-99) on the all-time Gonzaga list. BARNUM HOT: Senior keeper Scott Barnum has started all six matches this season and has allowed just four goals for a 0.64 GAA. He has a saves percentage of .879. He has played all but 9:18 seconds of the season, Jeff Renslo spelling him against Trinity Western University. AMES SEES ACTION: Gonzaga University freshman Casey Ames saw his first action of the season against Georgia Southern University and promptly picked up his first career point on an assist of Tye Perdido's goal at 82:53 in the 3-0 victory. Ames prepped at Spokane's Lewis and Clark High.
