Men's Soccer Match Facts
Friday, October 10 - at San Diego, 7 p.m.
Sunday, October 12 - at Loyola Marymount, 2 p.m.

BULLDOGS TAKE WCC LEAD ON ROAD: Gonzaga University takes its share of the West Coast Conference lead on the road this weekend, facing the University of San Diego Friday at 7 p.m. and Loyola Marymount University Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs are 2-1-0 in the early stages of the WCC chase and tied with the University of San Francisco, 2-0-0 after the Dons came to the Pacific Northwest and swept Gonzaga and the University of Portland last weekend.

GONZAGA GETS HOME SPLIT: Gonzaga University came out of last weekend's West Coast Conference home openers with a split, falling to the University of San Francisco 1-0 and then downing Santa Clara University 2-1 in overtime.

FUNKHOUSER COMES UP BIG: Junior Ben Funkhouser continues to come up big for Gonzaga University. He drilled home a 30-yarder last Sunday at 97:33 to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara University. It was Funkhouser's second career match-winning goal, the other coming last season against the University of Washington. Funkhouser also assisted on the equalizer by Mitchell Weller that drew the Bulldogs into a 1-1 tie at 80:40. The product of Spokane's East Valley High now has six goals and six assists in his career. The six goals are second among active players and the six assists lead active players. Funkhouser's three goals and three assists this season are both single-season highs. He leads the team in scoring with 9 points.

BULLDOGS STILL TOPS IN WCC: Gonzaga University continues to have the best record in the West Coast Conference, the Bulldogs taking a 5-4-1 overall record on their southern California road swing this weekend. The University of Portland is 4-4-2 for the next best mark in the WCC.

BARNUM STINGY: Junior keeper Scott Barnum continues to be stingy in the nets for Gonzaga University. The transfer from Whitworth College has a 1.17 goals-against-average and has been the starting keeper since the second match of the season. He has a pair of shutouts to his credit. He boats a 5-3-1 record, all three of the losses by one goal.

OFFENSE PICKING UP: After scoring just 19 goals in 20 matches a year ago, Gonzaga University has already dented the nets for 14 goals through the first 10 matches this season. The Bulldogs had six multi-goal matches in 2007 and have five thus far this season. On the flip side, the Bulldogs 15 goals allowed this season already equals the total allowed all of 2007.

BULLDOGS VS. USD: Gonzaga University will be trying to snap a four-match losing streak when the Bulldogs face the University of San Diego Friday night. Gonzaga was blanked 1-0 in both meetings a year ago, including an overtime contest at home. Gonzaga's last win in the series was 3-2 in 2005, which is also its last win in San Diego. The Toreros lead the overall series 14-4-1.

BULLDOGS VS. LIONS: Gonzaga University has the most wins over Loyola Marymount University than any other West Coast Conference school. The Bulldogs hold an 11-8-1 edge in the series, but the Lions have won seven of the last 10 meetings. The teams split last year's series, Gonzaga winning 3-1 at home and LMU taking a 1-0 win in the re-match in Los Angeles. The last road win for Gonzaga in the series was 3-2 in 2005. Prior to LMU's recent success in the series the Bulldogs had won four straight matches from 1998-01 and at one time held an 8-1-1 lead in the series.

HOME FOR SINGLES: Following this weekend's two road matches, there's only one match on tap for Gonzaga University each of the next two weeks and both are at home. The Bulldogs will host Saint Mary's College next Friday at 3 p.m. with the University of Portland coming to town Friday, Oct. 24, for a 2 p.m. match.

THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 115-106-21 in his 14th season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 234-158-34 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. He picked up his 100th Gonzaga win in 2006 with a 3-0 home win at Saint Mary's College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last 10 seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance. In 2005 Gonzaga went to the final match of the season with a chance to win the WCC title. He was accorded his third WCC Coach of the Year honor in 2005 to go with similar honors won in 1996-97 as he was the first coach in Gonzaga history to receive back-to-back WCC Coach of the Year accolades. He is the fourth winningest coach overall in WCC contests with 47 wins and is second among active coaches, Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego atop both lists with 74 wins.
