Fri., Oct. 14 - at San Francisco, 6 p.m. Sun., Oct. 16 - at Santa Clara, 3 p.m. BULLDOGS BY THE BAY: Gonzaga University heads to the Bay Area this weekend to face the University of San Francisco at 6 p.m. (some schedules reflect a 7 p.m. start) on Friday and Santa Clara University at 3 p.m. (some schedules reflect a 2 p.m. start) on Sunday. The trip begins a stretch that will see the Bulldogs play seven of their next eight matches on the road. The only home match for the Bulldogs between now and Nov. 6 is an Oct. 20 date with the University of Portland. Following that home match the Bulldogs will be at Portland, Loyola Marymount University, the University of San Diego twice and Saint Mary's College prior to their Nov. 6 return home against the University of Washington for a non-conference affair. Officials have re-scheduled the Oct. 2 contest against USD that was postponed in Spokane because of an unplayable field due to heavy rains to Monday, Oct. 31, in San Diego, the day after USD and Gonzaga play their regularly-scheduled match in San Diego. No time or location in San Diego for the Oct. 31 makeup has been determined. GONZAGA FALLS TO GAELS: There was just one match on the slate for Gonzaga University last week, the Bulldogs dropping a 1-0 decision to Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference match played at the Eastern Washington University Sports and Recreation Center because Gonzaga's Martin Field was unplayable as a result of heavy rains the previous weekend. The Gaels have now won two straight against Gonzaga and three of the last four. Gonzaga won last year's first meeting 2-1 in Spokane then dropped a 2-0 re-match in Moraga, Calif. SECOND HALF WOES: The second half has been the Achilles heel for Gonzaga University this season. Opponents have scored 12 of their 15 goals in the second half. The Bulldogs have held seven of their nine opponents scoreless in the first half. Gonzaga, meanwhile, has spread out the offense, scoring six goals in the first half and five in the second half. The Bulldogs are 2-1 this season when leading at halftime. RANKED FOES: Gonzaga University will be facing its first ranked teams of the season this weekend. The University of San Francisco is ranked 21st by College Soccer News, 22nd by Soccer America and is in the also-receiving-votes category of the Soccer Times Top 25. Santa Clara University is ranked 9th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), 11th by Soccer America and 13th by both Soccer Times and College Soccer News. The Broncos are No. 2 in the Far West Regional rankings behind the University of New Mexico, while USF is 10th in the HSCAA Far West rankings. BULLDOGS VS. RANKED TEAMS: Gonzaga University is 13-29-3 against ranked teams. The last Bulldog win over a ranked foe was last Oct. 29 when the Bulldogs topped No. 22 Loyola Marymount University 1-0. Gonzaga had six matches against ranked teams a year ago. Santa Clara University was ranked both times Gonzaga faced them last season, No. 4 Santa Clara winning 1-0 and No. 15 Santa Clara prevailing 2-0. BULLDOGS VS. DONS: Heading into Friday's match at the University of San Francisco, Gonzaga University trails in the series 7-6-0. USF has won four straight after the Bulldogs had taken six in a row. The Dons took both meetings last year by 1-0 scores. USF is the defending West Coast Conference champion and is currently 6-3-1 overall, 2-1-0 in WCC play. BULLDOGS VS. BRONCOS: The Santa Clara University Broncos hold an 8-4-1 edge in the series against Gonzaga University. The Broncos have won three straight and four of the last five. SCU took both meetings a year ago, 1-0 at Gonzaga and 2-0 at home. MARTIN FIELD UPDATE: Gonzaga University athletic director Mike Roth is optimistic Martin Field will be playable when the Bulldogs return home Oct. 20 to face the University of Portland. "We're doing everything we can, but the biggest help has been Mother Nature," Roth said. "With the warm, dry weather we've had this week our field continues to improve and we anticipate being able to return to Martin Field next week." SCHEDULE CHANGE: Gonzaga University's final two home matches of the season have been switched to a Thursday-Saturday affair. Santa Clara University will now visit on Thursday, Nov. 10, with the University of San Francisco in town Saturday, Nov. 12. Both matches will be at 1 p.m. The switch was to avoid playing matches on College Cup Selection Sunday. FOLLOW THE ZAGS: All Gonzaga University men's soccer home matches can be followed via Gametracker on the Bulldogs athletic website at http://www.gozags.com. Gametracker is a service of Online College Sports, the official web provider for Gonzaga athletics, and is a real time update of the action. Selected Gonzaga road matches are also available via Gametracker. To see if Gametracker is available for a match go to Gonzaga Events at the bottom of the home page. If Gametracker is available there will be a Gametracker link. THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 87-83-12 in his 11th season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 206-133-25 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last nine seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance.
