The match will be the only action of the weekend for the Bulldogs, who will head to the Bay Area next weekend to face Santa Clara University on Friday and the University of San Diego on Sunday. Gonzaga has just one more homestand remaining after this weekend, the Bulldogs hosting the University of San Diego Nov. 7 and Loyola Marymount University Nov. 9 prior to finishing the regular season Nov. 16 at Saint Mary's College. BULLDOGS, GAELS BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE: Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie last Friday in the only action of the week for the Bulldogs. It was the first tie in West Coast Conference play for the Bulldogs and their second deadlock this season. All the scoring came in the first half as the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Tye Perdido won a race to the ball and slipped it into the open net for his sixth goal this season at 8:20. A Gaels player headed the ball toward SMC keeper Jason Badger to gain the safety control of the possession, but Badger was coming out of the box to follow the play at the time of the header and the ball went past him. Perdido won a dead sprint to the ball deep to the left of the goal and was able to direct the ball to the far side and into the empty net. SMC knotted the match at 39:56. KISSIN' YOUR SISTER: Ties have become the norm for Gonzaga University the past four seasons. With two ties this season the Bulldogs have played 12 ties the past four seasons. From 1999-04 Gonzaga played just five ties. Only five of the 12 deadlocks have come at home. Over the past four seasons the Bulldogs have also played 20 overtime matches. Gonzaga has posted a 6-3-11 record in overtime the past four seasons. Prior to the start of the plethora of overtime matches in 2005 the Bulldogs had played just 20 overtime affairs in the eight previous seasons from 1997-04. PERDIDO KEEPS ROLLING: After going scoreless in four straight matches, Gonzaga University junior Tye Perdido has scored a goal in each of the last two matches. He got the lone goals for the Bulldogs in a 2-1 overtime loss at Loyola Marymount and in the 1-1 ties last weekend against Saint Mary's College. The native of Kula, Hawai'i now has a team-high six goals and 12 points. His 12 career goals and 4 career assists give him 28 points, tops among active players. He's three goals shy of cracking the Gonzaga single-season top 10 and a pair of goals away from moving into 10th on the career goals charts. STREAK ENDED: Ben Funkhouser had a streak snapped last Friday. The junior from Spokane had at least a point in the four matches Gonzaga had scored until Tye Perdido scored an unassisted goal in last week's 1-1 tie. Funkhouser had two goals and two assists over the previous four matches in which Gonzaga had scored. He's second on the team in goals with three and points with 10. NO LOVE: Gonzaga University was without sophomore Nick Love last week against Saint Mary's College, and his status for this week won't be determined until at least Thursday. Love was injured a week ago last Sunday at Loyola Marymount University when he suffered a broken thumb in a collision with an LMU player. His right hand has been in a soft cast, but he is anticipating getting a regular cast if x-rays are favorable Thursday. It the fractured bone has aligned itself then the hand will be placed in a hard cast. The decision will then be made if he plays with a pad on the cast. At this point it doesn't appear surgery will be necessary, but Thursday's exam will further determine that scenario. BULLDOGS VS. PILOTS: Gonzaga University has not lost to the University of Portland in the last seven matches following the 2-1 Bulldog win at Portland in the first meeting this season. Gonzaga is 4-0-3 against the Pilots dating back to 2005. Gonzaga is 2-0-1 in the last three home matches with the Pilots, the teams playing to a 2-2 double-overtime tie last year in Spokane. Gonzaga swept the 2006 series and Portland swept the 2004 series in the first year of double round-robin play in the West Coast Conference. THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 115-108-22 in his 14th season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 234-160-35 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. He picked up his 100th Gonzaga win in 2006 with a 3-0 home win at Saint Mary's College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last 10 seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance. In 2005 Gonzaga went to the final match of the season with a chance to win the WCC title. He was accorded his third WCC Coach of the Year honor in 2005 to go with similar honors won in 1996-97 as he was the first coach in Gonzaga history to receive back-to-back WCC Coach of the Year accolades. He is the fourth winningest coach overall in WCC contests with 47 wins and is second among active coaches, Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego atop both lists with 77 wins.
