Barclay Earns District 8 All-Academic Soccer Honor
Nov. 3, 2009
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior defender Nick Barclay has been named to the ESPN The Magazine District 8 All-Academic men's soccer team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Barclay carries a 3.46 grade point average in civil engineering. He was named to the 2008 West Coast Conference All-Academic team, the 2008 WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll and was tabbed the WCC Defender of the Year last season while also earning first-team honors. He became the first Bulldog to be named the conference's top defender. With Barclay spearheading a veteran defense, the Bulldogs have posted four shutouts this season as he has started and played all 16 matches. He was an all-tournament selection at the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico and the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic. He has scored five goals and has four assists for 14 points in his career, and his penalty kick last Sunday against Saint Mary's College was the match winner in the Bulldogs 5-0 victory, the third match-winning goal of his career. Other Bulldogs who have been recent selections to the District 8 All-Academic squad are Scott Bertram in 2003 and George Josten from 2005-07. Josten was a third team Academic All-American in 2005 and garnered first-team honors in 2006 and 2007. Barclay will now go on the national Academic All-America Ballot.
