SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men’s tennis made a furious rally in singles play to beat UC Davis 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Stevens Center.

UC Davis took the doubles point to start out the day with 6-4 wins on Nos. 2 and 3, but GU regrouped and came out firing in singles play on the way to the comeback win.

"This was a great test for these guys because UC Davis is a good team that has beat two teams in our conference in USF and Pacific,” head coach Peter MacDonald said. “For our guys to take care of business even after dropping the doubles point, this should give us confidence to know that we are going the right direction. I think that this team, every single one of them, has a lot of fight. They do a good job of finding answers out there from one to six. I have a lot respect for UC Davis, they always put together a great team.”

The victory keeps Gonzaga perfect on the dual season with a 6-0 record. UCD’s doubles point was the first dual-match point any GU opponent has put on the board this season. The four singles wins moved GU to a perfect 34-0 on the singles courts in dual matches.

Hunter Egger started it off for the Zags with a 6-3, 6-4 win on No. 3, followed by Vincent Rettke’s victory on No. 4 to put GU up 2-1 in the dual. Rettke beat Jonathan Star 7-5, 6-3.

Shortly after Rettke’s victory, Ruadhan O’Sullivan came from behind in both of his sets on the way to a 7-5, 6-3 win on No. 2.

That set up GU’s Sam Feit on No. 1. The Zag sophomore took over for the final two games against UCD’s Ivan Thamma with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Gonzaga will be back on the road after a 13-day break from matches at Oregon on Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. Stay tuned to for links to follow the match.
