MTEN Claims 11th Doubles Point but Falls 4-2 in Moraga
April 14, 2017
MORAGA, Calif.—The Gonzaga men’s tennis team claimed another doubles point Friday, but the Bulldogs picked up just one other point during a 4-2 loss to Saint Mary’s in Moraga.
The Bulldogs won the doubles point – their 11th of the season – with two pairs victories. Freshmen Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly picked up a 6-3 win on court two, and the Zags’ third pair of Ronzai Saurombe and Simón Homedes Dualde added a 6-4 victory as well. The 11 doubles points equals the Zags’ recent program high set in 2010. Gonzaga has won four of their six doubles points during West Coast Conference play, and the pair of Saurombe and Homedes Dualde have posted a 4-1 record against conference foes.
Singles play was tightly contested with two matches going three sets and two seeing either a set tiebreak or extra game. Rettke picked up the Zags’ other point in the dual, downing Matthew Campana in two sets on court two. He won the first frame 6-2 and then picked up a second-set tiebreak to complete the win, his team-leading 18th of the school year.
Saint Mary’s won the match with four singles victories. They picked up a pair of two-setters with 6-2, 6-4 victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Atop the singles lineup, sophomore Ruadhan O’Sullivan forced a third set with a 5-7 win during his second. He lost that deciding third frame to Damon Kesaris, however, 6-2.
Sophomore Sam Feit also forced a third set in his match at No. 3 singles. The Zag freshman won his first set against Nash Vollenweider 2-6, but the Gael countered at 6-3 in the second. That contest’s third set went to an extra game, but Feit fell by a break in the end.
On court six, Homedes Dualde was one game away from a victory and another GU point when that match was halted. He led Daniel Krtuik 6-3, 6-5 when Saint Mary’s clinched the dual. That contest was left unfinished.
The Bulldogs (6-10, 0-6 WCC) will finish off their road slate Saturday, April 15, with a match at Pacific. That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m. in Stockton, Calif.
