Men’s Tennis Finishes With Win Over Saint Mary’s
April 14, 2018
SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men’s tennis was able to take the victory over Saint Mary’s, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon inside the Stevens Center. The match was also the final dual of the regular season for the Zags.
“I’m really proud of the guys how they bounced back after a tough loss yesterday,” head coach Peter MacDonald said. “All in all, everyone played really well today, and I thought we finished strong.”
The Zags fell behind by a game early in doubles, but quickly closed the gap and took control on all three courts, leading them all 5-3 at one point. Saint Mary’s closed to 5-4 on all three, but the No. 3 GU pair of Matthew Perkins and Simon Homedes Dualde clinched a 6-4 win just seconds before Sam Feit and Ruadhan O’Sullivan clinched the point with a 6-4 win of their own.
Saint Mary’s took the next two matches, but Gonzaga had control of the final two courts in play. Hunter Egger was the first to finish with the clinching point, taking a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win on No. 3. Everly’s match went unfinished as he led 6-1, 6-6 and was near clinching in a tiebreak third set.
The match was Gonzaga’s final dual of the regular season. The top six teams in the league earn an invite to the WCC Championships on April 26-28 in Claremont, Calif. Gonzaga is currently outside of the top six with other league matches remaining.
