SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga men’s tennis team battled Loyola Marymount all throughout singles play Friday afternoon, winning two matches but falling 4-2 in the dual at The Stevens Center in Spokane. Gonzaga got its two dual points from a pair of singles victories. Freshman Sam Feit gave the Zags their first point with a two-set win on court three. Facing Luke Bohuslav, he took his first set in an extra game at 7-5 before doubling up his LMU foe 6-3 in set two. The win was his third of the West Coast Conference season and 18th this year. On court one, Ruadhan O’Sullivan bounced back from a first-set loss to earn his first win of the conference slate. After dropping the first set 3-6 to Nick Borchenko, O’Sullivan took the second, winning it 6-4 and forcing a deciding third frame. The sophomore from Cherrybrook, Australia then won the third by three games for the match victory and Gonzaga’s second point of the day. Feit’s and O’Sullivan’s wins drew Gonzaga to within one at 3-2 in the dual, and the two remaining matches were just as tight. On court two, Vincent Rettke battled with Gabriela Diaz Freire all day. Those two went to a tiebreak in the first set, which Diaz Freire took 7-5. The second set between those two saw an extra game with the Lion prevailing 7-5 to clinch the dual win for Loyola Marymount. At No. 6 singles, Emilio Moreno won his first set by a 7-5 scoreline before dropping the second 4-6. He and his opponent, Alex Bourgeois, had not started the third set before their match was left unfinished. Three of the six singles matches went to third sets Friday, and four sets were decided by either a set tiebreak or an extra game. The other of those third sets came on court four where Kyle Everly took the middle frame against Lukas Moenter. After falling in the first 6-2, he claimed the second 4-6 by winning the set’s final three games. Moenter then won the third 6-0. The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the dual by winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches to finish. In doubles, LMU won a 6-3 match on court one and 6-4 contest on court three for the dual’s first point. Then, they added points from No. 5 singles and No. 4 singles before Feit started the Zags’ rally on court three. Gonzaga (6-12, 0-8 WCC) will close out the 2017 dual season with one last home match on Sunday, April 23 against Pepperdine. Before the 1:00 p.m. contest, senior Ronzai Saurombe will be honored for his dedication to Gonzaga tennis over the last two years.
