Zags End Season with Senior Day Loss
April 23, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.—The 2017 dual season came to an end for Gonzaga men’s tennis Sunday as the Bulldogs fell 4-1 to the visiting Pepperdine Waves inside The Stevens Center in Spokane.
“We’re a young team, and the guys got a good look at what the WCC has to offer from a competitive standpoint this season,” said Gonzaga head coach Pete MacDonald of his squad after the match. “We have a lot of work to do…but they’re talented. They’re very talented. With experience, they’ll just get better.”
The Bulldogs won one of the three doubles matches that began the dual Sunday. At No. 1 doubles, Ruadhan O’Sullivan and Sam Feit evened the pairs contest at one match apiece with a 6-4 victory over Stefan Menichella and Jack Van Slyke. The Waves clinched the doubles point a couple minutes later when Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sydney downed Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke 6-2 on court two.
At No. 3 doubles, senior Ronzai Saurombe saw his last collegiate match, pairing with Simón Homedes Dualde. With Saurombe hampered with an injury, the Bulldog duo fell down 5-0, but they won the next two games to stave off elimination. That rally fell short, however, and they lost 6-2 in the first doubles match to finish.
When singles play started, Pepperdine took a 3-0 dual lead with victories on court one and court five. On court six, however, Emilio Moreno gave the Zags a point with a strong 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Waves’ Tom Hill. The win was Moreno’s first of the West Coast Conference season and third in dual play. The Waves clinched the dual with the next singles match to finish, however, as Feit fell 6-1, 6-4 to Pedro Iamachkine.
The dual was tighter than the score indicated, however, as Rettke was just a game away from clinching a second point at No. 2 singles, and Everly was battling hard at No. 4 singles. Rettke led Lautaro Pane 6-1, 5-3 when play was halted, and Everly was down 3-2 in the second after narrowly falling in the first 7-5.
With the loss, Gonzaga ends the year with a 6-13 record, 0-9 in WCC play. The Zags graduate just one senior – Saurombe – and return the other six players on the roster.
“The guys have a lot of respect for Ronzai,” said MacDonald of his lone senior. “He’s shown the guys what hard work is; he’s shown the guys what taking ownership of your game means. He’s done a lot of very positive things for this program, and we’re really going to miss him.”
