CHENEY, Wash. – The Gonzaga University men’s team opened it fall season with first and second play of the GU/EWU Classic at Eastern Washington University Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs had three players post first and second round victories in the Singles bracket.

Three Bulldog veterans in senior Stefan Feddersen, junior Roman Dojcak and sophomore Conor Feeney each advanced to Saturday’s third round after posting victories in the first two rounds on Friday. Feddersen received a first round bye and later beat Jeff Cero of Portland State University 6-2, 6-1. Dojcak advanced to the third round after beating EWU’s Kenneth Norline 6-1, 6-3. Feeney beat University of Idaho’s Tim Huynh 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 to move on to the third round.

Along with sophomore Michael Schuster, a couple newcomers in freshmen Jake Davis and Scott Sullivan also posted victories to move into the consolation bracket’s quarterfinals. Davis posted a first round 8-3 victory over Seattle University’s Patrick Boorkman and SU’s Adam Sterich 8-2. Sullivan pulled off arguably the day’s biggest upset as he defeated PSU’s top singles player Alex Vanderscheldon 8-6 in his first collegiate match.

Freshman Tomasz Falkowski also had a solid collegiate debut, winning his first match 8-4 over University of Montana’s Cody Kohlmoos 8-4. Falkowski later matched up with another top singles player from PSU, battling Kyle Erickson tough but dropping his second round match 8-5.

“It was a sold first day for us in terms of getting our new players out into a competitive environment. Each player played well in their first matches of the year, I was very pleased with our effort today” said fourth year head coach Peter MacDonald.

Play continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
