O'Sullivan Advances to Dar Walters Singles Semifinals
Oct. 7, 2017
BOISE, Idaho—The Gonzaga men’s tennis team continued play at the Dar Walters Fall Classic Saturday as a pair of Bulldogs reached bracket semifinals at the Boise State-hosted tournament.
Junior Ruadhan O’Sullivan reached the main singles bracket semifinals with two wins. He opened the day with a three-set win over Portland’s Tom Hann, coming back to win the second set 6-1 and the third set super-tiebreak 10-4. In the quarterfinals, O’Sullivan squared off against teammate Sam Feit, whom he beat 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3). With the win, his seventh of the season, O’Sullivan will now face Nathan Boniel of Portland State for a berth in the final.
Also going undefeated on the day, Emilio Moreno tallied three victories in order to reach the singles consolation semifinals. All three of Moreno’s wins came in just two sets as he downed Seattle U’s Matthew Alderson, Whitman’s Bear Lee, and the Redhawks’ Trenton Nield. Moreno, also a junior, beat Nield 6-3, 6-4 for his semifinal berth. He will face Bradley Gleason of Abilene Christian, whom Kyle Everly defeated Friday in the Round of 64.
Besides O’Sullivan, two other Bulldogs competed in the main bracket’s Round of 16. Feit reached that all-Bulldog quarterfinal by upsetting the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Matteo Tinelli of Boise State in two sets at 6-3, 6-4. Fellow sophomore Vincent Rettke also advanced to the quarterfinals with a two-set win over Oregon’s Ty Gentry, but he fell in three sets to Boniel to see his tournament end.
Earlier in the day, Rettke and Everly took third-seeded Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto to a tiebreak in the doubles tournament, but the Idaho pair prevailed, eliminating Gonzaga from doubles contention.
Both O’Sullivan and Moreno will take the courts at 11:30 a.m. on the fourth and final day of play at the Dar Walters Fall Classic. Those matches will take place at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise.
