Final Draws

BOISE, Idaho—With a pair of two-set victories, junior Emilio Moreno claimed a bracket title Sunday as the Gonzaga men’s tennis team wrapped up the Dar Walters Fall Classic in Boise.

Opening the day in the consolation singles bracket’s semifinal round, Moreno breezed through a showdown against Abilene Christian’s Bradley Gleason 6-4, 6-1 for a spot in the final. In that championship match, the Mexicali, Mexico, native won an elongated first set 7-5 but dispatched foe Max Korkh 6-2 in the second for the victory.

It’s Moreno’s first career consolation title and second bracket title; he won his flight at the Bulldog Classic last season. After going 5-1 at the Dar Walters Fall Classic, Moreno is 6-4 overall so far in 2017-18.

“Emilio got better with every match,” said Gonzaga men’s tennis head coach Peter MacDonald. “He needed a tournament like this to implement improvements he’s made in his game.”

Also taking the court Sunday morning, fellow junior Ruadhan O’Sullivan played a main bracket semifinal match against Portland State’s Nathan Boniel. O’Sullivan won the first set 4-6, but Boniel took the next two 6-1 and 6-4 to eliminate the Zag.

“We saw improvement with all the guys over the weekend,” said MacDonald of his squad, “which makes all the hard work these guys have been putting in worth it.”

The Bulldogs now have a week and a half off before beginning their next tournament, the ITA Northwest Regionals. That regional championship will take place Oct. 18-23 in Stockton, Calif.
