Feit, Moreno, and O'Sullivan Advance Twice at Regionals
Oct. 19, 2017
STOCKTON, Calif.—The Gonzaga men’s tennis team saw a strong start to the ITA Northwest Regionals Thursday as three Bulldogs picked up a pair of wins at the regional championship tournament held in Stockton, Calif.
Sam Feit, Ruadhan O’Sullivan and Emilio Moreno remain in main singles bracket contention after they each notched a pair of victories Thursday. Feit opened his tournament with an upset as he took down No. 16-seeded William Genesen of Stanford 6-3, 6-3. In his next match, the Zag sophomore downed UC Davis’ Mitchell Iwahiro in two sets as well for the Round of 32 berth. Feit is one of two unseeded players remaining in his quarter of the bracket and one of 10 total.
Moreno also advanced after pulling an upset, his coming in the second round. In the first, he downed Washington’s Kawika Lam 6-2, 7-6 (3). In the second, Moreno squared off against Santa Clara’s Robert Seby, one of the tournament’s designated No. 17 seeds and the Broncos’ No. 1 singles player last season. Seby won the first set 4-6, but Moreno countered with straight 6-3 sets to advance.
O’Sullivan, meanwhile, entered the Regionals as another of the No. 17 seeds and stayed true to form. The Gonzaga junior downed another Aggie in the first round before dispatching Fresno State’s Youssef Hassan in two sets in the second. He’ll play the bracket’s No. 2 seed, Portland’s Mike Pervolarakis, in the Round of 32.
This is the first time since 2012 that Gonzaga put three players in the Northwest Regional’s Round of 32. At least one has advanced that far every year since 2010, and two or more have done so in each of the last three seasons.
Moreno, O’Sullivan, and Feit were joined by two more Zags in the Round of 64. Sophomores Vincent Rettke and Bryan Husin posted wins over foes from Pacific and Eastern Washington, respectively, in the first round. Both lost their second matches of the day, however, and will continue in consolation play for the rest of the weekend.
The Bulldogs will continue the ITA Northwest Regionals on Friday, Oct. 20. The first doubles matches of the tournament will begin at 8:00 a.m., and singles play starts at noon at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center on the University of the Pacific campus.
