Strong Singles Start to Bulldog Classic for MTEN
Oct. 27, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga men’s tennis team saw a strong start to its own Bulldog Classic Friday as all eight singles players advanced at least one round to open play at the final tournament of the fall season.
Seven of those eight Bulldogs are still active in main brackets, including all four in the A Singles bracket. Both Vincent Rettke and Emilio Moreno won strong two-set matches against foes from Eastern Washington and Seattle U, respectively, to reach the second round. Ruadhan O’Sullivan and Sam Feit, after receiving a bye through the first round, each reached the third round after two-set wins of their own in the evening. They’ll play just one singles match on Saturday, Oct. 28, while both Rettke and Moreno have a potential of two.
In the B Singles flight, three Bulldogs earned first-set wins, but all four in the bracket advanced. Freshman Matthew Perkins won his home debut for Gonzaga, dispatching Portland’s Gabe Souza 6-3, 6-1. Sophomores Kyle Everly and Simón Homedes Dualde also tallied first round victories. Homedes Dualde, however, had to play his second round contest Friday night as well, falling to Ignacio Tejerina of Montana in three sets. Perkins, Everly, and Bryan Husin, who advanced via a walkover, will play their second round contests on Saturday.
Two Zag duos also moved onto the quarterfinals in doubles play Friday. Rettke and Everly advanced with a pair of wins Friday morning, beating pairs from Montana and Boise State by similar 8-4 scorelines. O’Sullivan and Feit, meanwhile, took advantage of another first-round bye, dispatching Montana State’s Mateus Ceolin and Marcos Zelver 8-1 in their only match of the day.
Gonzaga continues play at the Bulldog Classic on Saturday, Oct. 28. Doubles play begins at 8:00 a.m., and the first singles matches will start at 9:30, again inside The Stevens Center.
