Zags Sweep Two Brackets to End Bulldog Classic
Oct. 29, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga men's tennis team ended its fall season with a pair of titles Sunday as Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke claimed the Doubles bracket title and Ruadhan O'Sullivan took the A Singles crown at the Bulldog Classic inside The Stevens Center.
"The guys continue to get better every day," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "We've been focusing on the fundamentals of the game and will continue to do so. I am very happy for the success this group has had this fall. If the guys continue to put in the work and stay focused, I think we can make some major strides this spring."
Both the Doubles and A Singles title matches were all-Gonzaga affairs. Everly and Rettke made the doubles final with an 8-5 win over a pair from Eastern Washington, and they matched up with O'Sullivan and Sam Feit after that Zag duo downed a team from Montana State. The pair of sophomores won that final match, downing O'Sullivan and Feit 7-3 in a tiebreak for their first bracket title as a pair.
O'Sullivan did claim a title of his own, however, beating Feit in the A Singles championship. O'Sullivan reached the final match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Idaho's Mark Kovacs in the semifinal, and Feit took down Portland State's Nathan Boniel in three sets for a berth in the finale. Both spent the majority of the 2017 dual season in the top two spots of the Bulldog lineup.
This is the second time in four years that the Bulldog Classic's top singles bracket was decided between two Zags. In 2014, Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar - who were also partners in doubles play - competed for the title with Nazal prevailing.
Freshman Matt Perkins also played a pair of matches Sunday. He fell in his B Singles semifinal 2-6, 6-0, 6-2, and both he and Simón Homedes Dualde lost a doubles consolation semifinal Sunday as well.
With the end of the Bulldog Classic, Gonzaga's fall tournament schedule has come to an end. The Zags will next take the courts in January to begin the 2018 dual season.
